About this deal

He focuses mostly on the rooms and goes through them one by one, and only briefly mentions the garden at the end, which was fine for me though. Maybe it's because I lived for a year in a cheap apartment carved out of a Victorian mansion that I still managed to make livable that I find his analysis of awkward "flats" and redesigning them to be so fascinating. The ancient practice of feng shui is uncovered in this simple and practical guide, revealing the tools that will lead to a healthier, happier home for every budget. Feng shui is knowledge that has been passed down through generations, like my grandfather who taught me.

We almost always feel better in a beautiful, balanced space, and that’s a step in the right direction to health, wealth and happiness. Because living rooms are social places, to encourage conversations, you don’t want a TV to dominate the room (even though we all watch them!

A too-small door can mean less fortune entering your home, too big and it won’t hold it in, or signals immodesty. Living rooms are where families gather, visitors are welcomed and there’s the most life and energy, so go to town with plants, art and mirrors (making sure they reflect lovely things, not doorways – you don’t want to be startled by your own reflection on entering).

I’ve been taking Mr Tan’s advice and moving things around in my apartment, and I’m feeling good results! But Cliff only thought about applying feng shui himself in 2010, on moving into “a tiny trapezoid-shaped attic room with a broken window,” in London. it was fun reading about feng shui in English and seeing the author try to explain 「太極生兩儀,兩儀生四象,四象生八卦。」 i like that this book took many modern adaptions so it's not just "put a toad at your entrance for good fortune". An enjoyable and informative read that gave me clear ideas about how to rearrange my furniture and make the most out of my space.

Cliff has become an internet sensation with his videos demonstrating the principles of feng shui, and in this practical guide he shows how to apply these principles room-by-room in your own home. I wasn’t a fan of the amount of white space which felt like an attempt at making the book artificially longer. The main cooking appliance, the stove, is the central element (fire) and the sink (water) is secondary, so avoid placing them together, though plants between them can mediate if needed. In Feng Shui Modern, TikTok influencer Cliff Tan answers these questions and more, explaining the ancient practice of feng shui and how it can be translated to modern homes.

Menopausing will also celebrate the sharing of stories, enabling women to feel less alone and more understood, and talk openly and positively about menopause. But then I read the intro to this book and realized Modern Feng Shui is about feeling good in the space you’re in and making the most of what you have. Desks can be disguised a little if you keep the units on either side at the same level so it flows and blends in.

I love Cliff Tan’s social media videos and picked up this book for that reason, but I didn’t expect to get as much out of it as I did. Great explanations of why elements are placed in certain areas and why certain situations are best avoided. Halls are the perfect place to hang religious artefacts, should you like them, to remind you of your guide as soon as you come home.

This is for anyone who enjoys design (visual and interior), psychology, and decorating, and you don't have to be an expert because the explanations are so clear. The start of a movement: to get everyone talking about the menopause in every home, GP surgery and workspace. Mack's experiences when he faces up to his darkest nightmares will astound you, and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. tan explains all of the concepts and principles in a way that's very easy to understand, especially for those of us who don't know the cultural and historical contexts of the practice. But it doesn't matter too much if you agree with these symbols or not, as the later parts of the book where he talks about architecture, furniture, etc. If you must have a chandelier, never place it over the sofa, it will feel threatening and spiky hanging over your head, try the coffee table instead.
